Alumni
Marilyn M. Hetzel, BS, MS
Principal Investigator/Director
Haskell Indian Nations University
Area of work: School of Education, Diabetes Education in Tribal Schools Grant
Marilyn combines her background knowledge in science, public health, education and cultural awareness in working with students who will be future public health researchers, practitioners, and educators. As a Native educator with strong experience in the biomedical sciences, the integration of a fuller public health education and experience is her next step in fulfilling my professional goals towards training and nurturing Native public health researchers and practitioners. Happily, she is entering my sixth year at Haskell Indian Nations University where she has taught and advised students from all around the United States. Currently, Marilyn is the Steering Committee Chair for the Diabetes Education in Tribal Schools grant, DETS, funded by the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Indian Health Service. She considers it a pleasure to call herself a colleague with seven other Tribal Colleges working towards a K-12 science-based diabetes prevention curriculum by 2007.
Personal Information:
My tribal affiliation is Hunkpapa Lakota, Standing Rock Sioux, from Little Eagle, South Dakota and LeRoy, Kansas. I enjoy walking, yoga, reading, working with horses, spending time outdoors in my gardens, entertaining with friends, and traveling!
What I would like to get out of this program:
I anticipate to learn more about management of programs where the funding and resources may not be at optimal levels. I also, would like to learn more about crisis management and communication with local, state, and federal agencies.
